Broken Heart

I painted this painting in response to a dream about death and bereavement; a heart bleeding over a black lake in a black room. While painting, the painting changed to a more abstract heart in the universe. At the University of Amsterdam I attended a lecture on the 'Broken Heart Syndrome' and ended up at takotsubo.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy or "Broken Heart Syndrome" is when the heart muscle suddenly becomes weakened. It usually occurs after severe emotional or physical stress. The condition is temporary, and most people recover within two months. The disease is named after a Japanese ceramic pot (tsubo) that serves as a trap to catch squid (tako). In this disease, the left ventricle takes on a shape that resembles the Japanese pot.
